Private Physician, Writer & Educator
About me
I am a medical doctor, writer and educator working across Australia and New Zealand. I trained in general practice and palliative medicine, and my clinical interests have gradually expanded to include preventive health, men's health, sexual medicine, healthy ageing and personalised medical care.
My work has taken me through different parts of medicine, from everyday general practice and procedural care to caring for people approaching the end of life. These experiences have shaped how I understand health, illness and the responsibilities of being a doctor. They have also left me interested in questions that medicine does not always answer particularly well.
Alongside clinical practice, I am involved in medical education, healthcare advisory work and writing. I am particularly interested in the relationship between medicine and the wider human experience: how we make decisions under uncertainty, what it means to age well, and how health intersects with family, work, identity and responsibility.
I believe good medicine requires scientific rigour, sound judgement and an understanding of the person beyond their diagnosis. Much of my work is informed by the idea of calibration rather than optimisation, recognising that more intervention is not necessarily better care.
Outside medicine, I am a husband and father. Family life, living and working across different cultures, and the experience of growing older have continued to influence how I think about the work I do and the life it is meant to serve.
This website brings together the different aspects of my professional life, my writing and some of the ideas I continue to explore.
